Mad Cats is an endless runner/shooter style game prototype featuring three lanes and enemy projectiles. Additionally, the player is discouraged from spamming their weapon as shooting their cannon will create craters upon impact that become obstacles. We wanted to do something unique to set this prototype apart from other endless runner/shooter games, so we decided to experiment with an isometric viewpoint. The isometric view allows for more of the playable area to be visible on the screen at a time, which allowed us to speed up gameplay, add enemies and threats from behind the player, and play with more enemy types.

Lessons Learned: More features and mechanics are not always better. In this case, new players have far too many options to be comfortable with the game right away. If we were moving forward with the development of this prototype, we would like to introduce mechanics gradually through levels, and have some levels restrict which mechanics the player can use so the player is not overwhelmed with options.
