Café Mews is a restaurant management game prototype with a focus on friendship rather than money. While restaurant management games are typically fun and challenging, we found that they often miss out on one of the most rewarding parts of owning such a business -- making friends with regular customers! We attempted to capture a bit of that magic in Café Mews.
Each cat in the game has their own unique personality, style, food preference, and life stories. Your goal in this game is to understand their perspective, make friends, and keep the cats coming back time and time again. Unlocking and serving specific foods attracts new cats to meet, but once they become regulars, they're willing to come to your shop regardless of the food being served. Cats that you annoy or are rude to are far less likely to visit, even if you're serving their favorite dish.

Lessons Learned: Every aspect of a game's design should reflect the game's main goal. In this case, we wanted to put a friendship-oriented spin on the typical business management style game. However, despite players appreciating the dialogue and personalities of each cat, we failed to make your friendship score impact the game in a meaningful way. Given more time, we would like to add more features to support making friends with the cats, like collectibles, and having friendly cats bring their friends to support your business. We would also like to add more challenge by introducing conflicts between cats with differeing personalities via 3-way conversations.
