Asteroids: Planetary Defense
Asteroids: Planetary Defense is a prototype I worked on during my first semester at University of Utah. As an iteration on the Asteroids arcade game, it features the iconic Asteroids movement and shooting mechanics. However, we decided to add a player objective other than self-preservation, and added a planet that the player is meant to protect. We added an orbital path around the planet that the player can lock into and use like a turret, but be careful, the force of an asteroid hitting the planet will knock the ship out of orbit. In order to make the player focus on protecting the planet, the ship posseses a powerful force field capable of deflecting incoming asteroids. When the situation gets too much for bullets to handle, deflecting an incoming asteroid with the ship might just save the day!
Platform: Web (PC, Mac, Linux)
Engine: HTML5/Phaser Physics
Role: Producer, Designer, Music, Art
Team Size: 6
Prototype Duration: 2.5 Weeks
Lessons learned: Iteration is powerful! We had just over two weeks to work on this project, and by slowly adding and augmenting features, we ended up with an end product we were happy with.
